Kandy, in the hills of central Sri Lanka at about 500m, was the last Sinhalese capital and the nation's Buddhist center, its old city a UNESCO World Heritage site. Kandy is a UNESCO Buddhist sacred city in the hills; the drier months of January–April and July–September are most comfortable, while October–December see a bit more rain. The core is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), solemn and devout; a stroll around Kandy Lake is tranquil and pleasant. The Esala Perahera elephant procession in July–August is grand and spectacular. This is the famous starting point of the Kandy–Ella highland tea-plantation train, so book ahead.
