Ayutthaya Travel Guide

The 400-year-old capital of Siam, home to Wat Mahathat's Buddha head, reclining Buddhas and red-brick stupas, a UNESCO park.

📍 Destination Overview

Ayutthaya was the capital of the Siamese Ayutthaya Kingdom for nearly four hundred years; today the whole ancient-city ruins are listed as a World Heritage site. The Buddha head entwined in tree roots at Wat Mahathat is the most famous image; the tall prang and reclining Buddha of Wat Ratchaburana, and the three stupas of Wat Phra Si Sanphet, with their red-brick ruins, tell of former glory. Just over an hour from Bangkok, you can cycle among the ruins or tour the old city by boat — the classic historical day trip from Bangkok's suburbs.
