Yilan, on the Lanyang Plain in north-eastern Taiwan, is ringed by mountains on three sides and faces the sea. Jiaoxi hot springs are the island's favourite hot-spring resort, Taipingshan offers forest adventures and offshore Turtle Island is good for whale-watching. Since the Hsuehshan Tunnel made it about an hour from Taipei, Yilan is a top weekend escape.
