Phillip Island
Phillip Island lies about 140 km south of Melbourne and is world-famous for its "Penguin Parade" — at dusk, colonies of little penguins return from the sea and waddle up the beach to their burrows, one of Australia's most beloved natural spectacles. The island also offers a koala conservation centre, the Nobbies' seal colonies and dramatic coastal cliffs, and hosts the MotoGP Grand Prix. Arrive before dusk, learn at the visitor centre, then watch from the viewing stands — flash photography is forbidden to protect the wildlife.
