The Twelve Apostles📍 Port Campbell
The Twelve Apostles are a line of dramatic limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean along Victoria's Great Ocean Road. Carved by relentless waves over millennia, they are the park's most iconic sight — though there were never actually twelve, and one pillar collapsed in 2005. Walk the boardwalks and lookouts at Port Campbell National Park for shifting views of the golden stacks and turquoise surf, with the Gibson Steps below. Sunrise and sunset bathe the rocks in amber light, drawing photographers from around the world.

Gold Coast📍 Gold Coast
The Gold Coast stretches 57 kilometres along Queensland's southeast coast, its skyline anchored by the Q1 tower in Surfers Paradise, whose Skypoint deck sits 230 metres up. Surfers, backpackers and families pack the beaches; south at Burleigh Heads National Park you trade towers for rainforest and winter whale-watching, when humpbacks pass close to shore. Behind the coast, Tamborine Mountain and Springbrook hold waterfalls and glow-worm caves. A light rail links the beaches, and it is the theme-park capital of Australia. Even in June the water stays swimmable.

Sydney Opera House📍 Sydney
The Sydney Opera House is one of the most iconic buildings of the 20th century, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and opened in 1973. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, its sail-like shells rise from Bennelong Point and have become the symbol of Sydney. Take a guided tour or stroll the waterfront at night to see it illuminated.

Taronga Zoo📍 Sydney
Taronga Zoo is a world-class zoo on Sydney Harbour, known for koalas, kangaroos and harbour views.

Blue Mountains National Park📍 Sydney
Blue Mountains National Park sprawls across the sandstone ridges west of Sydney, its name coined for the blue haze cast by eucalyptus oil in the sunlight. The signature view is the Three Sisters at Echo Point, with the Scenic World cableway and the world's steepest railway descending into the Jamison Valley. Bushwalkers can choose from hundreds of trails through temperate rainforest and deep gorges, while Wentworth Falls and the Jenolan Caves add watery and subterranean drama. Less than two hours from Sydney, it is an easy escape into the bush.

Great Barrier Reef📍 Cairns
The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretching along Queensland's coast. From Cairns, take a boat or glass-bottom vessel to outer reefs for snorkelling and diving among turtles and clownfish.
