Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and Australia’s second-largest city, set on the lower Yarra River at the head of Port Phillip Bay. Federation Square
Federation Square sits in central Melbourne opposite Flinders Street Station. Opened in 2002 and designed by Lab Architecture Studio, its zinc, sandstone and glass facades shatter into fractured geometry — Melburnians affectionately call it the crushed beer can. The precinct houses the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the Ian Potter Centre of the NGV (Australia's art), while the big screen airs the Australian Open and New Year's Eve. At night the facades glow in shifting colour, and the steps are always occupied by people-watchers watching trams slide past. Loved or loathed, Fed Square is Melbourne's agreed meeting point and living room.

Flinders
Completed in 1910, Flinders Street Station is Melbourne's most photographed landmark: a golden dome, copper cupolas and a cream-and-gold façade stretched along the city's busiest crossing. The row of arched departure clocks on the main entrance has made meet me under the clocks a Melbourne phrase for over a century. Facing Federation Square across the intersection, the station glows in the late-afternoon light — the one picture every visitor to Melbourne ends up taking.

Como House is an 1847 colonial mansion in South Yarra that belonged for generations to the prominent Armytage family and is now cared for by the National Trust. Murray's Lookout
Murray's Lookout is an elevated viewing point on Melbourne's fringe that rewards walkers and drivers with a broad, open panorama: on clear days the layered terrain and distant skyline unfold before you, with low-angled light at sunrise and sunset doing the heavy lifting. The platform itself is modest, best treated as a photo stop within a longer hike or drive. Pair it with surrounding parks and trails, and confirm access conditions before setting out.

Polly Woodside
Moored on the south bank of Melbourne's Yarra River, Polly Woodside is a three-masted iron barque launched in Belfast in 1885 and nicknamed after the owner's wife. In the age of sail she carried coal and nitrate between Australia and South America, rounding the stormy waters of Cape Horn several times before retiring into the care of the National Trust. Deck, crew quarters and the captain's cabin are restored to their working days, and the volunteers on board, mostly sailing enthusiasts, talk rigging and tackle with infectious enthusiasm.
