Introduction

Moored on the south bank of Melbourne's Yarra River, Polly Woodside is a three-masted iron barque launched in Belfast in 1885 and nicknamed after the owner's wife. In the age of sail she carried coal and nitrate between Australia and South America, rounding the stormy waters of Cape Horn several times before retiring into the care of the National Trust. Deck, crew quarters and the captain's cabin are restored to their working days, and the volunteers on board, mostly sailing enthusiasts, talk rigging and tackle with infectious enthusiasm.
