Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, stretching about 2,300 km, made of thousands of coral reefs and islands, the only living structure visible to the naked eye from space, listed as a World Natural Heritage site in 1981. Cairns is the main gateway to the Great Barrier Reef; from here a cruise takes about one to two hours to reach the outer reef, where you snorkel or dive among colorful coral gardens, swimming with tropical fish, turtles and manta rays, or view the underwater world from a semi-submarine or glass-bottom boat. Daintree Rainforest
The Daintree Rainforest north of Cairns is one of the oldest tropical rainforests on Earth still existing, surviving about 135 million years, older than the Amazon, and a World Natural Heritage site. This dense, lush rainforest has astonishing biodiversity, home to cassowaries, tree kangaroos and rare plants; a cruise on the Daintree River may spot wild crocodiles basking in the sun. The rainforest reaches the coast, meeting the Great Barrier Reef at Cape Tribulation, forming a unique scene where two World Heritage sites sit side by side. Green Island
Green Island is a coral cay just 45 minutes by boat from Cairns, blanketed in rainforest and ringed by white sand — the most accessible doorway to the Great Barrier Reef. Holloways Beach
Holloways Beach is a small beachside community on Cairns' northern beaches line, roughly 7-10 km north of the city centre, named after the cove of the same name. The area was historically known as 'Holloway Beach', and the current spelling with the apostrophe was adopted around the 1970s. On the ocean side it offers a stinger-netted swimming enclosure, a boat ramp and public facilities, while the suburb is mostly a quiet residential beach. Development flourished after the Captain Cook Highway linked the northern suburbs to the coast. It is a peaceful spot for a relaxed beach day on Cairns' northern beaches.
