Plitvice Travel Guide

Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia's most famous natural attraction, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Sixteen terraced lakes are divided by natural travertine dams, water spilling from one level to the next through 92 waterfalls, and the colours shift from emerald to turquoise to deep blue with minerals, algae, light and season. The park's largest cascade, Veliki Slap, drops about 78 metres and closes the canyon route in style. About 22 km of boardwalks and 36 km of hiking trails thread the system, and the ticket includes the electric boat across Lake Kozjak and the panoramic train between entrances. 2026 admission runs in three tiers: EUR 10 (November-March), EUR 23 (April-May and October) and EUR 40 (June-September, dropping to EUR 25 for entry after 16:00), free for under-7s. From June to September entry is timed and capped at 12,000 visitors a day, with July and August slots often selling out days ahead, so book online. First-timers should start at Entrance 2: the Upper Lakes are quieter, the boardwalks run downhill through the dams, and the route finishes at the Great Waterfall in 4-6 hours. May, when snowmelt peaks the flow, and September, when crowds thin and autumn tints begin, are the best months; swimming is strictly prohibited, so keep out of the water.

The Lower Lakes are the lower-elevation section of the Sixteen Lakes park, chaining the four main lakes of Gradinsko, Veliko, Milanovacko and Novakovica, and the classic hiking stretch of the whole system. Travertine dams hold the water back level by level, each spill becoming a cascade, the colours shifting from jade to deep blue with minerals and light while the boardwalks run almost at water level; at the end of the section stands Veliki Slap, the 78-metre Great Waterfall that crowns the route, its roar filling the canyon as the strongest memory of the whole walk. The classic Route C enters at Entrance 1 and follows the boardwalks downhill through the lakes and falls for 4-5 hours, finishing at the Great Waterfall; an electric boat across Lake Kozjak and the panoramic shuttle link the Lower Lakes to the Upper Lakes, so the two sections can be strung into one day. In winter, roughly November to mid-March, when the Upper Lakes close, the Lower Lakes stay open and become the park's main ground. They are covered by the park ticket, with no separate charge.

Lake Kozjak is the heart of Plitvice Lakes National Park: about 81.5 hectares and some 46 metres deep, the largest and deepest lake in the park, lying between the Upper Lakes (twelve) and the Lower Lakes (four). That it is one lake at all is the work of travertine - a 40-metre barrier that once divided two lakes grew faster downstream, so about 400 years ago the water rose and merged them, the old barrier now about 4 metres under the surface; the bed is impermeable dolomite, so the water never sinks into the karst. Three piers, P1, P2 and P3, are served by open-sided silent electric boats, the main P2-P3 crossing taking about 10-15 minutes, included in the park ticket. From the boat you can see Stefanija's Island near the centre, a small travertine islet named after Crown Princess Stephanie of Belgium's 1888 visit; fish are visible in the exceptionally clear water between forested limestone cliffs, the quietest stretch of water in the park. At the southern end the Burget cascades pour in from Gradinsko Lake. In peak season the P3 pier queues 20-30 minutes between 10:00 and 15:00; coming from Entrance 2 on Route H and boarding at P2 is usually quicker, and wheelchair users can take the boat with staff assistance.
