Introduction

Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia's most famous natural attraction, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Sixteen terraced lakes are divided by natural travertine dams, water spilling from one level to the next through 92 waterfalls, and the colours shift from emerald to turquoise to deep blue with minerals, algae, light and season. The park's largest cascade, Veliki Slap, drops about 78 metres and closes the canyon route in style. About 22 km of boardwalks and 36 km of hiking trails thread the system, and the ticket includes the electric boat across Lake Kozjak and the panoramic train between entrances. 2026 admission runs in three tiers: EUR 10 (November-March), EUR 23 (April-May and October) and EUR 40 (June-September, dropping to EUR 25 for entry after 16:00), free for under-7s. From June to September entry is timed and capped at 12,000 visitors a day, with July and August slots often selling out days ahead, so book online.
