Skagway Travel Guide

Gateway to the Klondike Gold Rush, where a century-old narrow-gauge railway climbs White Pass

📍 Destination Overview

Skagway, at the top of Alaska's southeast panhandle near the Yukon border, was the jumping-off port of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. It preserves gold-rush wooden architecture, painted cabins, plank sidewalks and saloons, and its century-old narrow-gauge White Pass & Yukon railway is among the world's most scenic, climbing past glaciers and canyons.

Skagway is best visited in summer (May–September), the Alaska cruise season, when the weather is mild and the White Pass & Yukon railway operates. Other months are cold with most facilities closed. Cruise passengers usually stop for half a day to a day — book narrow-gauge train seats in advance, explore the boardwalk town on foot, or head out on a short gold-rush trail hike. It's high, windy and cool in the mountains, so pack windproof layers.
