Laguna de Manialtepec
The Laguna de Manialtepec lies about 20 km north of Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca, a lagoon separated from the sea by only a sandbar. It is famous for bioluminescence: on warm-season nights, disturbed plankton glow blue-green, and paddling a kayak through it feels like moving through a river of stars. By day it is also a spot for birding and mangrove ecology trips.

Playa Zicatela at Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca is known to surfers worldwide as the Mexican Pipeline. The offshore bathymetry makes swells stand up sharply close in, producing fast, hollow, quickly closing barrels that in the summer swell season regularly run several metres — a professional-grade wave that hosts international events each year. For the same reason the currents and shorebreak are genuinely dangerous to ordinary visitors: without experience you should not go in, and lifeguards and warning flags are normally posted on the sand.
