No.1 Morelia
Palace of Justice
The Palace of Justice in Morelia stands beside the main plaza, a large colonial stone building with a heavy façade and orderly arcades. Inside it keeps murals depicting Michoacán's local history and judicial tradition — a window onto the public life of this World Heritage city.
Sightseeing
No.2 Morelia
Tarascas Fountain
The Fuente de las Tarascas is Morelia's most iconic city sculpture, at the junction of the avenues leading to the historic centre. At its centre stands a Purépecha woman holding a tray of fruit, symbolising Michoacán's agricultural abundance — a favourite meeting point and postcard image.
Sightseeing
No.3 Morelia
Aqueduct of Morelia
The Aqueduct of Morelia is the most photographed civic structure in a city built of pink stone: 253 semicircular arches run along the Calzada Fray Antonio de San Miguel for more than 1,700 metres, reaching 9.24 metres at their highest, all in the local pink volcanic stone known as cantera rosa. Bishop Fray Antonio de San Miguel had it built between 1785 and 1789 after years of drought, both to bring drinking water into what was then Valladolid and to provide work for indigenous residents; it remained the city's main water supply until 1910. It carries no water now, but the arches shade one of the pleasantest walks in town, from the Fuente de las Tarascas at the western end to the Santuario de Guadalupe in the east, with trees, vendors and street performers, busiest on weekend evenings and quietest on weekday mornings. The tallest arches stand near Jardin Villalongin, while the Santuario end gives a view back towards the historic centre. It is free and open around the clock, illuminated after dark as Morelia's signature night image, a twenty-minute walk east from the cathedral along Avenida Madero, close to Alfredo Zalce's murals in the Palacio de Gobierno and the Clavijero Cultural Centre.
Sightseeing
No.4 Morelia
Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is a Neo-Gothic Catholic church in Morelia, built from the late 19th to early 20th century; its pointed arches and openwork towers stand out in the city. Dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron of Mexico, its stained glass and altar are solemn — an important place of worship and pilgrimage in Morelia.
Sightseeing
No.5 Morelia
Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, in the mountain forests of Michoacán and Mexico State, is a Unesco site where hundreds of millions of North American monarch butterflies cluster each winter. The orange blanket over fir trees is spectacular; best viewing is November to March.
Sightseeing
No.6 Morelia
Catedral de Morelia
The Cathedral of Morelia is the landmark of the city's historic center, its pink-stone Baroque facade and twin towers glowing under night lighting. The whole center is a Unesco site; the cathedral is its brightest jewel.
