Jebel Akhdar is a cool highland of Oman's Al Hajar Mountains, about 2,000 metres up—a rare summer retreat. Its hallmark is ancient villages and layered stone terraces clinging to canyon cliffs, irrigated by old channels. Each spring, hillsides of Damask roses bloom and are distilled into prized Omani rose water. Hikers can walk cliff trails, visit villages and viewpoints.
