Serengeti National Park is a boundless acacia savanna in northern Tanzania, contiguous with Kenya's Maasai Mara in one ecosystem — Earth's most famous wildlife kingdom, the ultimate symbol of the African savanna and a World Heritage Site. Dry season Jun–Oct best for wildlife; each season has highlights. The name comes from the Maasai for 'endless plains'; grasslands stretch to the horizon dotted with acacias and granite kopjes. Lion density is very high; the Big Five and wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, etc. gather. Most famous is the Great Migration centered here — millions of wildebeest and zebra follow a circular route across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara: around Dec–Mar they calve on the southern plains (hundreds of thousands of foals born), Jun–Jul cross the Grumeti north, endlessly, with lions and crocodiles in a survival drama. Track by 4x4 or view by hot-air balloon. Plateau cool mornings/evenings — bring a jacket.
