Grumeti River

Introduction

The Grumeti River is a crucial water system in the western corridor of Serengeti National Park, and one of the most dramatic settings during the great annual migration. Each year from May to July, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra move north from the southern plains, facing massive crocodile ambushes while crossing the Grumeti River, creating heart-pounding crossing battles as spectacular as the famous Mara River crossings. The riverbanks are lined with dense vegetation, hippo pods gather in the water, and various predators lurk along the river waiting for opportunities. The western corridor offers lush greenery contrasting with the eastern short-grass plains, providing visitors a different Serengeti landscape. Being more remote than the central and southern sectors, it receives fewer visitors, making it ideal for travelers seeking deep wilderness experiences.
