Introduction
Red Bay National Historic Site is located on the Labrador coast of Newfoundland and Labrador (along the Strait of Belle Isle) and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 as the Red Bay Basque Whaling Station. It is the earliest, most complete and best-preserved archaeological evidence of European whaling in North America: in the 16th century Basque sailors whaled and rendered oil at 'Gran Baya', leaving tryworks, coppersmith shops, wharves, seasonal dwellings, burial grounds, and submerged shipwrecks with whale-bone remains.
