Introduction

The Peace Tower is the tall clock tower above the main entrance of Parliament Hill's central block, about 92.2 meters high, a landmark of Ottawa and the visual core of Parliament Hill. This Gothic Revival tower, completed in 1927, was built to honor Canadian soldiers who died in World War I. Inside is a Memorial Chamber for the fallen and a carillon of 53 bells whose chimes echo over the city. The observation level at the top is a great vantage point—the Parliament Hill complex, the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River and the whole city skyline come into view. Visitors can ascend the tower for free (with a timed ticket) and take in Ottawa's magnificent panorama from above. The solemn Peace Tower carries Canada's historical memory and prayers for peace.
