Introduction

Thunderbird Park is located beside the Inner Harbour in Victoria, British Columbia. Established in 1941, it is one of the finest outdoor collections of Indigenous totem poles in North America. The park displays about 20 towering totem poles and large carved works representing the artistic traditions of British Columbia's Gitxsan, Haida and Kwakwaka'wakw Indigenous peoples, and is named after the legendary Thunderbird. The park also features Wawadit'ta, a traditional longhouse built in 1953 by the renowned Indigenous artist Mungo Martin, adjacent to the Royal BC Museum.
