Introduction

The Louis Riel Statue is located on the south lawn of the Manitoba Legislative Building in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Created by sculptor Miguel Joyal, it was unveiled in May 1996. The bronze statue stands 3.5 meters tall and depicts Riel wearing a suit — the founder of Manitoba and leader of the Metis people. Commissioned by the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF), the statue faces toward St. Boniface across the Assiniboine River. This statue replaced a controversial abstract sculpture by Marcien Lemay unveiled in 1971 (which was moved to St. Boniface College in 1991 and relocated in 2005 to its current site at 200 Avenue de la Cathedrale).
