Introduction
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve lies on the ridges of north-central Costa Rica and takes its name from the near-constant mist, making it one of the world's best-known cloud forests. Altitude and humidity create a distinctive ecology: trunks are covered in moss, ferns and epiphytes, mist drifts through the trees, and birds and insects are exceptionally varied, with the resplendent quetzal the target of many visitors. Trails and hanging bridges let you walk at canopy height. As cloud forests are sensitive to climate change, the reserve manages visitor numbers — go early and bring a waterproof jacket and grippy shoes for wet ground and sudden rain.
