Introduction

The Museo de Antropología de Xalapa is Mexico's second largest anthropology museum after the national one in Mexico City, focused on the three ancient cultures of the Veracruz gulf coast: Olmec, Totonac and Huastec. Designed by an American architectural practice, its galleries unfold down a gently stepped spine opening onto gardens on both sides, filled with daylight. The collection's core is seven colossal Olmec heads, together with a wealth of smiling Totonac figurines and Huastec sculpture.

✨ Highlights

1
Seven colossal Olmec heads
More than any other single museum, allowing close comparison of faces and headgear.
2
Smiling Totonac figures
Small ceramic figures with open smiles, a tradition particular to central Veracruz.
3
The stepped galleries
A spine descending the slope in stages, opening onto gardens — a fine piece of modern Mexican museum design.
4
Huastec sculpture
Works such as the life-and-death figure, showing the cosmology of the northern gulf coast.
