Introduction
Lake Chapala is Mexico's largest freshwater lake, straddling the states of Jalisco and Michoacán about 50 km south of Guadalajara. Broad and shallow, backed by dry ridges, its shoreline towns — Chapala itself and neighbouring Ajijic — have drawn North American retirees for decades thanks to the mild climate, giving the lakefront a settled small-town feel of cobbled streets, artesanía workshops and waterside restaurants. Small boats run out to Isla de los Alacranes.
