Introduction
Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto in Baja California Sur was established in 1996, covering roughly 200,000 hectares of the western Gulf of California together with five main islands: Carmen, Coronado, Danzante, Monserrat and Catalina. These are exceptionally productive waters, with blue and fin whales, bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions, making it one of the world's significant cetacean areas; in 2005 it was inscribed as part of the World Heritage site "Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California".
