Introduction

The Parque Nacional Barranca del Cupatitzio lies within the city of Uruapan, declared a national park in 1938 — small in area but densely green. The Cupatitzio river rises here, spring water pushing out of the rock to form a succession of small falls and pools, the best known spring being the Rodilla del Diablo, the Devil's Knee. Paved paths follow the ravine between ferns and tall trees, with the sound of water constant and the air cool and damp year-round, in sharp contrast to the dry heat of the town outside. There are trout ponds and craft stalls inside the grounds.
