Introduction

El Palacio is the core complex at Palenque: halls, galleries and subterranean passages arranged around four courtyards, extended repeatedly over several centuries. Its most striking feature is the four-storey square tower, generally read as an observatory and ceremonial platform — a form very rare in Maya architecture. Stucco reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions survive across the walls, recording the reigns and campaigns of the dynasty of K'inich Janaab' Pakal; the cool, winding tunnels below link the different patios.
