Introduction
Fort San Lorenzo stands on a headland at the mouth of the Chagres River on Panama's Caribbean coast, a key Spanish colonial defensive work now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the sixteenth century, it guarded the Chagres River and the water route to Panama City and was attacked repeatedly by pirates and fleets; today you can still see its thick stone walls, gun batteries and moat. Set within the San Lorenzo Protected Area amid tropical rainforest, it offers lush greenery and open sea views, with howler monkeys often nearby. About a dozen kilometres from Colon, it suits a half-day trip combined with the canal and rainforest, blending history and nature.
