Shea’s Performing Arts Center

Introduction

Shea's Performing Arts Center is one of Buffalo's most historically and artistically significant performance venues. Designed by renowned theater architect C. Howard Crane, it opened in 1926 as a Paramount "movie palace" and is regarded as one of the most opulent movie theater buildings in the United States. The architecture blends French Baroque, Spanish Moorish, and Italian Renaissance elements in a lavish eclectic style, with a breathtaking carved ceiling, crystal chandeliers, marble staircases, painted murals, and gilded ornamentation, seating about 3,000 and designated a National Historic Landmark. In the 1970s, community and government efforts rescued Shea's from demolition and launched a major restoration that gradually returned the theater to its former glory. Today, Shea's Performing Arts Center primarily hosts touring Broadway productions, concerts, comedy performances, and community events, serving as an indispensable core of Buffalo's cultural life and a model of the American theater restoration movement.
