Introduction

Kobuk Valley National Park is one of Alaska's most remote and pristine national parks, located about 40 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in northwestern Alaska. The park covers over 1.7 million acres but has no roads connecting to the outside world. Visitors can only arrive by small aircraft from Kotzebue or Bettles, making it one of the least-visited national parks in the United States. The park's core landscape is a glacial valley up to 30 miles wide carved by the Kobuk River, with towering sand dunes on both sides. The Great Kobuk Sand Dunes rise 100 feet and stretch for miles, representing the only sand dune landscape in the Arctic region, making this coexistence of ice and sand extremely rare on Earth. The park is also one of North America's major caribou migration routes, with tens of thousands of caribou crossing the Kobuk Valley each spring in a spectacular sight.
