Introduction

Plaza de España is an extraordinarily grand and beautiful, colorful and photogenic square in Seville—a semicircular plaza woven from splendid architecture, vibrant tiles and winding canals; it is one of Seville's most stunning and photogenic landmarks, full of brilliant, romantic charm. Seville's Plaza de España was built in the early 20th century as a magnificent building for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition held in Seville, and its design is sumptuous and grand. The square takes the form of a huge semicircle (said to symbolize Spain opening its arms to embrace its former American colonies): its main body is a ring of magnificent, imposing semicircular buildings (blending Renaissance Revival, Moorish Revival and Art Deco styles), with a tall central tower and a tower at each end, commanding and stately. Before the buildings winds an artificial canal (like a moat) around the square, crossed by several finely decorated, colorful tile bridges. The square's most dazzling, most photogenic detail is the ring of brilliant tilework around the base of the semicircle—here, with gorgeous colored azulejo tiles, a series of niches representing Spain's provinces (one per province, painted with that province's map, historic scenes and coat of arms) are inlaid and decorated, colorful and exquisite beyond compare, astounding. Besides, visitors can boat on the square's canal, or stroll and photograph leisurely on the square. With its stunning settings, the square has also been a filming location for famous films and series.
