Middleton Place

Introduction

Middleton Place northwest of Charleston, South Carolina, is one of America's oldest continuously operated historic plantations, established in the 1670s and stewarded by the Middleton family to this day. The estate is famed for America's oldest and finest classical landscape garden. The 65-acre geometric gardens were designed in 1741 by Henry Middleton, inspired by European classical gardens with symmetrical parterres, lakes, and terraced lawns. The plantation was damaged during the Civil War and gradually restored. The grounds also preserve an 18th-century stable and Middleton family collections, with spring azaleas and winter camellias as the most spectacular seasonal displays.
