Introduction

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is the oldest plantation garden in the Charleston area, founded in 1676 and operated by the Drayton family for more than three centuries. The plantation is famed for America's oldest romantic-style gardens, filled with century-old live oaks, camellias, azaleas, and magnolias, with Spanish moss draping from branches like green curtains, creating the ultimate Southern Gothic romantic atmosphere. The site preserves original slave cabins and a slave revolt memorial, candidly presenting the dark history of the plantation, making it the most complete historical narrative among Southern plantations. A petting zoo, swamp nature trail, and roaming peacocks make it a destination for families and horticulture lovers.
