Introduction

Salvation Mountain is a large folk art installation near Niland, California, southeast of the Salton Sea. Built single-handedly by local artist Leonard Knight from adobe, straw and thousands of gallons of paint, this ~15 m tall, ~46 m wide colorful hill with religious murals ("God Is Love") and striking pop-art style is one of America's most unique folk art landmarks. The main structure is an adobe-and-straw hill covered in vivid paint — yellow, blue, green, red and white — creating a childlike, whimsical world. Giant white letters read "God Is Love," and a colorful "palace" structure sits atop. The Smithsonian has listed it as a folk art resource to protect, and it appeared in the film Into the Wild. Visiting Salvation Mountain and experiencing this one-of-a-kind folk art in the California desert is a unique, unforgettable experience.
