Introduction

The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes lie just east of Stovepipe Wells Village, right off Highway 190, in Death Valley National Park, California. Of the five dune fields in the park, this is the easiest to reach and the most photogenic. The tallest dunes rise about 100 feet (30 m); the sand is eroded debris carried down from the Amargosa Range to the north and stopped by mountains to the south, producing crescent, linear and star-shaped forms together. There are no maintained trails - visitors walk straight from the lot across open sand, a round trip of roughly 2 miles (3.2 km) with 185 ft (56 m) of gain taking about 90 minutes. The field takes its name from the abundant mesquite trees, whose bean pods are a traditional food of the Timbisha Shoshone, and a dry lakebed beneath the sand shows that water once covered this area. With almost no light pollution the night skies are exceptionally clear, and this is one of the few dune fields in Death Valley where sandboarding is permitted. The dunes have become well known since they doubled as a location in the Star Wars films.

✨ Highlights

1
The park's easiest dunes
Right by Stovepipe Wells Village and Highway 190 - the most accessible and walkable of Death Valley's five dune fields, rising to about 100 feet.
2
Three dune shapes
Crescent, linear and star-shaped dunes together, formed from debris eroded off the Amargosa Range to the north and halted by mountains to the south.
3
No trail, walk on open sand
There are no maintained trails; walk straight from the lot, about 2 miles round trip with 185 ft of gain, roughly 90 minutes.
4
Dawn and dusk light
Low-angle light at sunrise and sunset throws strong graphic shadows along the ridges, a classic California abstract landscape subject.
5
Clear night skies
Almost no light pollution makes the Milky Way vivid on clear nights, and winter nights are cool enough for night photography - but watch for rattlesnakes.
6
Mesquite and Indigenous ties
The dunes are named for the abundant mesquite trees, whose bean pods are a traditional food of the Timbisha Shoshone.

🛈 Practical Info

→Season & Heat Warning:Death Valley holds the highest reliably recorded air temperature on Earth (56.7 C in July 1913). The National Park Service advises against hiking from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. between May and September, when sand surfaces exceed 45 C; the best window is October to April.
→Hiking the Dunes:There are no maintained trails - walk straight from the lot across open sand. The round trip to the tallest dune is about 2 miles (3.2 km) with 185 ft (56 m) of gain, roughly 90 minutes. Walking the firm sand between dunes is far easier than the soft sand and protects the ridge lines.
→Sandboarding & Gear:One of the few dune fields in Death Valley where sandboarding is allowed; bring your own board as there is no rental nearby. Wear closed-toe shoes and pack spare socks - the sand is cool enough for bare feet at dawn but scorching at midday. Bring plenty of water, a sun hat and warm layers for night photography.
→Safety & Ecology:The dunes offer no shade and no services; the nearest water and restrooms are at Stovepipe Wells Village, about a mile away. Rattlesnakes come out to bask after dark, so take care on night walks. Do not drive off-road onto the dunes, and pack out everything you bring in.
→Payment Note:Death Valley operates a fully cashless entrance - bring a payment card or use the self-service kiosks. Food and lodging inside the park exist only at Stovepipe Wells and Furnace Creek, and book well ahead in season.
→Opening Hours:Dunes open 24 hours a day, year-round, as does the park entrance. Visit October to April; the NPS advises against hiking May to September.
→Transportation:About 2.5 hours from Las Vegas (125 miles) and 30 minutes from Furnace Creek; roughly 4.5 hours from Los Angeles. Fuel up in Pahrump, Beatty or Lone Pine - fuel inside the park is limited and expensive, and mobile phone service is almost nonexistent.
