Introduction

Ubehebe Crater, located in the northern section of Death Valley National Park in California, is a massive volcanic crater approximately half a mile in diameter and 600 feet deep, one of Death Valley's most spectacular geological wonders. About 2,000 years ago, magma rising into groundwater triggered a steam explosion, creating this horseshoe-shaped crater. The name Ubehebe means basket in the Timbisha Shoshone language, as the crater resembles a basket in shape. Visitors can walk along the crater rim trail for a full loop, overlooking the layered volcanic debris deposits inside, or descend to the crater floor to experience the unique geological textures. Several smaller craters surround the main crater, including Little Ubehebe, together forming Death Valley's volcanic landscape complex.
