Introduction

Iolani Palace stands in downtown Honolulu as the only royal palace on American soil, serving as the official residence of the last two monarchs of the Hawaiian Kingdom, King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani. Built between 1879 and 1882, this magnificent structure was designed by Australian architects in a distinctive American Florentine style, with a facade of coral plaster and Corinthian columns topped by the royal coat of arms. The interior is lavishly decorated and featured one of the world's earliest electrical lighting systems, predating even the White House and the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The second floor preserves the King's throne room, dining room, and bedroom, displaying numerous royal artifacts and European court furniture. After the Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown in 1893, the palace served as the state capitol and government offices until meticulous restoration in the 1960s reopened it as a museum. It carries the complete history of the Hawaiian Kingdom's rise and fall, offering a precious window into Pacific island civilization.
