Introduction
Iao Valley State Monument is located in central Maui, Hawaii, a lush valley full of history and natural beauty. The 4-acre park is surrounded by the verdant West Maui Mountains and shrouded in mist year-round. Its most famous feature is the Iao Needle, a sharp volcanic rock column rising from the green ridge to an elevation of 2,250 feet, one of Hawaii's most recognizable natural landmarks. In 1790, the famous Battle of Kepaniwai took place here, a pivotal conflict in which Kamehameha I unified the Hawaiian Islands. The Iao Stream flows gently through the valley, and tropical plants flourish. Visitors can take an easy hike along the Iao Stream Trail or enjoy panoramic views of the Needle from a higher viewpoint.
