Pioneer Square

Introduction

Pioneer Square is Seattle's oldest neighborhood, located southwest of downtown and named for the 1852 landing site of the city's founders. This 35-block historic district preserves a complete ensemble of late-19th-century red-brick Romanesque buildings, once the bustling commercial hub during Seattle's gold rush era. After the 1889 Great Fire rebuilding, the original ground level became today's underground, explored via the famous Bill Speidel Underground Tour. Pioneer Square Park at its center features a Chief Seattle bronze statue and totem pole, surrounded by independent bookstores, art galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. First Thursday Gallery Walk each month is a highlight of the Seattle art scene, when the district comes alive with lights and music.
