Introduction
Fishing Bridge is a historic stone bridge in Yellowstone National Park spanning the Yellowstone River where it flows out of Yellowstone Lake. Built in 1902 at the north end of the lake, it was named for the excellent trout fishing here as fish congregated to spawn; today it is a famous landmark combining natural beauty and history. The scenery is stunning — from the bridge visitors can see the broad lake, the river rushing out and distant mountains. Historically one of Yellowstone's most popular fishing spots, large numbers of spawning Yellowstone cutthroat trout gathered here. To protect this precious species, fishing is now prohibited, but trout can still be seen swimming below. Nearby facilities include a small museum and gift shop at the Fishing Bridge Visitor Center, plus trails and campgrounds to Mary Lake and beyond. Visiting Fishing Bridge to admire the river and lake views from this historic bridge is a classic Yellowstone stop.
