Introduction

Coral Gables is an elegant, meticulously planned community in Miami. Designed in the 1920s by developer George Merrick, it features uniform Mediterranean Revival architecture, tree-lined boulevards, beautiful courtyard gardens and a relaxed, upscale atmosphere — one of Miami's most beautiful and refined residential areas and a Mediterranean-flavored destination. Architecture is distinctive: Merrick required Mediterranean Revival style throughout — white or beige walls, red clay tile roofs, arched doorways and courtyard gardens, giving a Mediterranean-town feel amid tree-lined streets. Famous landmarks include the Venetian Pool — a romantic public pool carved from a coral-rock quarry with caves, waterfalls and palms, one of America's most unique pools; Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden — a large botanical garden with rich tropical plants; and the Biltmore Hotel — a grand 1926 Mediterranean Revival luxury hotel whose iconic clock tower is Coral Gables' landmark. The area also has boutiques, galleries and upscale restaurants. Visiting Coral Gables to stroll its Mediterranean-style elegant streets is a refined Miami experience.
