Introduction
Olmsted Point is a roadside viewpoint along Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park, California, at an elevation of about 9,200 feet, offering the best view of the north face of Half Dome. Named after 19th-century landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the viewing platform was built in 1961. From here visitors see the rare back profile of Half Dome, distinctly different from the classic view from the valley's south rim, with its sheer polished granite surface overwhelming in scale. The area is scattered with glacial erratics, providing a natural classroom for glacial geology. A short trail leads to a higher overlook with views of Tenaya Lake and the vast Sierra Nevada high country, making it a must-stop on Tioga Road during its summer opening.
