Introduction

The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles is located in downtown San Jose, California, the first museum in the United States dedicated to quilt and textile art and a national authority in fiber arts since its founding in 1977. Originally started by the San Jose Quilt Study Group, the museum moved to its current location in 2014 with greatly expanded exhibition space. The collection holds over 1,500 quilts, textile works, garments, and fiber art pieces spanning from the nineteenth century to the present, covering traditional American quilts, Hawaiian quilts, Native American textiles, contemporary fiber art, and Asian immigrant textile traditions. Permanent and rotating exhibitions alternate between meticulously researched traditional quilt pattern studies and contemporary fiber installations that push the boundaries of the medium. The museum also houses a professional conservation studio, education workshop, and library, and offers regular quilting and textile creation classes, an essential pilgrimage for fiber artists, quilt enthusiasts, and cultural researchers, and a window into the evolution of American textile art and multicultural exchange.
