Abyss Pool

Introduction

Abyss Pool, located in the Lower Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, is one of the park's most celebrated large thermal pools. The pool measures about 12 meters in diameter and over 15 meters in depth, with water displaying a stunning deep blue-green hue reminiscent of a giant eye gazing at the sky, hence the name "Abyss." Abyss Pool is a typical geyser-type thermal feature, with water temperature consistently above 80 degrees Celsius. The pool periodically overflows with minor eruptive activity, though it does not produce regular large eruptions. The orange and yellow bands at the pool's edge are formed by thermophilic bacteria and mineral deposits, creating a striking color contrast with the deep blue center. A well-constructed boardwalk surrounds Abyss Pool, allowing visitors to observe the changing colors and steaming water up close. In early morning and late afternoon, the steam creates dreamlike light effects in low-angle sunlight, a favorite moment for photographers.
