Introduction

The Kampong in Miami's Coconut Grove on the shore of Biscayne Bay was the estate garden of famed plant explorer David Fairchild and is one of the four gardens of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. "Kampong" is Malay for "village," evoking a cluster of plants living together. Fairchild led U.S. Department of Agriculture expeditions worldwide, introducing more than 200,000 plant species to America; The Kampong is the living archive of his introductions. The garden holds over a hundred species of rare tropical fruit trees, spice plants, and ornamental flowers from around the world, including mango, durian, breadfruit, cacao, vanilla, and black pepper of major economic and cultural value.
