Beartooth Mountains
Introduction
The Beartooth Mountains are located on the border of Montana and Wyoming, forming one of the most magnificent alpine regions of the northern Rocky Mountains, renowned for rugged peaks, alpine lakes, and glacial landscapes. The highest peak, Granite Peak, reaches 3,994 meters and is the highest point in Montana. The Beartooth Highway traverses the core of the range, spanning approximately 108 kilometers and acclaimed by Charles Kuralt as "the most beautiful drive in America." The route crosses multiple passes above 3,300 meters elevation, offering spectacular alpine glacier views. The mountains are famous as grizzly bear habitat and home to elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and other wildlife. The area preserves pristine wilderness character, making it a paradise for hiking, climbing, fishing, and wildlife observation, and the most spectacular natural extension of Yellowstone's northern region.
