Introduction

Valley Forge National Historical Park is located approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Philadelphia and is one of the most important historical sites of the American Revolutionary War. During the harsh winter of 1777-1778, George Washington led the Continental Army in encamping at Valley Forge for six months, enduring the most difficult period of the Revolutionary War. In the severe winter with scarce supplies and rampant disease, approximately 2,000 soldiers perished, but the army was transformed through training by Prussian officer Baron von Steuben and emerged reinvigorated in the spring of 1778, turning the tide of the Revolutionary War. The park preserves reconstructed soldier log huts, the original Washington Headquarters, the National Memorial Arch of Valley Forge, and other historic structures, using museums, artifact displays, and historical interpretation to help visitors deeply understand this pivotal history that shaped the American national spirit.
