Carpenters' Hall

Introduction
Carpenters' Hall is a modest two-story red-brick building within Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, yet it holds an irreplaceable place in American founding history. On September 5, 1774, delegates from twelve colonies convened the First Continental Congress here, responding collectively for the first time to British coercive measures and setting the stage for the Revolutionary War. Built and still owned by the Carpenters' Company since 1770, it is the oldest trade guild seat in the United States. The interior recreates the original meeting table and chairs where George Washington, John Adams, and Patrick Henry argued passionately. Running a hand along the stair rail worn smooth by centuries, visitors can almost hear the fierce debate that decided North America's fate.
