Introduction

The Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park preserves the site of the oldest building in Las Vegas, recording the little-known Mormon pioneer history before the city was born. In 1855, Mormon missionaries traveled south from Salt Lake City and built a square adobe fort beside the Las Vegas Springs, aiming to establish contact with local Paiute Indians and create a way station. This fort was the first permanent non-native settlement in the Las Vegas Valley, predating the 1905 founding of the city by a full half century. However, due to harsh conditions and strained relations with native people, the Mormons abandoned the fort in 1857. Today the park preserves partially reconstructed adobe walls and the original spring site, telling the pioneer story through exhibits and artifacts.
