Introduction

Operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Birch Aquarium sits on the La Jolla Shores bluffs and is one of Southern California's leading public aquariums. More than 3,000 animals across about 150 Pacific species are on view, with emphasis on Southern California nearshore ecology and deep-sea research. The signature Giant Kelp Forest exhibit recreates a Pacific-coast ecosystem with three-story kelp, jellyfish, octopus and sharks moving among the fronds. An outdoor terrace overlooks the Pacific and Scripps Pier, ideal for sunset and tide-pool viewing.
