Introduction
The Wing Luke Museum is the first and only Smithsonian affiliate dedicated to Asian American history and culture, named after Wing Luke, the first Asian American elected to Seattle City Council. Located in the heart of the Chinatown-International District, it is housed in the historic East Kong Yick Building, built in 1910 by Chinese workers' collective funds, itself a living witness to a century of Asian American struggle. Immersive exhibitions tell the real stories of Chinese railroad workers, Japanese incarceration, and Filipino immigration. The museum preserves the original attic rooms where early Chinese laborers lived, with upper floors retaining early 20th-century immigrant family living spaces where time seems frozen between weathered wooden walls and vintage kerosene lamps, offering the most profound place to touch the living texture of Asian American history.
